One of our "hopes" is that our ride and our plans will encourage those who read our blog to do something to help others. We really believe that service for others should be an important part of everyones' life. Service can mean that you use your talents and time or use some of your treasures to help others. Part of our motivation for this "crazy" trip goes back to a devastating event that affected our family ten years ago this summer. It was my birthday and as usual we celebrate family birthdays with big parties. Some of the family had spent the afternoon boating on a lake near our home. On their way home there was an accident at an unmarked railroad crossing. Our daughter, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters were struck by a train. Our daughter was eight months pregnant and unknown to us at the time our daughter-in-law had just found out that she was also pregnant. Both babies were lost due the accident. We had family members in two different hospitals and spent several days traveling back and forth. Fortunately, everyone else eventually made it home and are living wonderful lives.
Our daughter and son-in-law's baby was named Michael Noel. A year after his death the family decided to host a mini-triathlon in his honor. The Magee 3 is always held on the third Saturday of July. We charge very little to enter, but any proceeds from the event are donated to local emergency services.
This summer Noel would have been ten years old. We have decided that during the next eight years we are going to work to raise enough money to give a substantial scholarship to a student who will graduate in what would have been Noel's class. Part of the criteria for the recipient will be that the individual or their family has faced hardship during the student's life and have kept working to overcome it.
We believe Noel was our angel and helped save the others in our family. It is our time to do whatever we can to be an angel to someone else. We encourage you to think about what you can do? How can you make a difference, be an angel to someone else? After you decide, make a plan and act on it.
We are in the process of making it possible for anyone following our blog to make a tax deductible donation to the Noel Magee Scholarship Fund. We are filing the appropriate federal forms for this and when we have confirmation we will put a link on website to make it possible to contribute.
Take care of yourself, and then do something to help someone else!
Peace Be With You and Those You Love,
Jack and Mary Kay
